Fall Safety Tips for your home

Leaves are falling all over Suffolk and Nassau Counties, and plenty of frosty mornings are on the horizon. Although most of us know to check our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and do an insurance policy review on our houses and cars…. some of us forget some important safety risks Fall brings.

Furnaces

None of us want the warm days of summer to be over. However, the colder temperatures will arrive and the heat needs to be put on. Fight it for as long as you want, it’s just an unavoidable part of living on the Northeast. Before turning the switch and setting your heat to start up, bring in your heating and cooling company to service your furnace. A furnace needs an inspection, and a professional will make sure it’s working properly. They’ll also catch any kind of leaks that may be present. Schedule your appointment soon, if you haven’t done so.

Space Heaters

Many of us rely on space heaters to keep rooms I our homes warm. They’re extremely effective, however, make sure you do NOT run them when you’re not home. And read the instructions before you use the space heater, because some of them need to be vented! It’s important to never put it within 3 feet of ANYTHING. Space heaters should have empty space around them - front, back, sides.

Do not BURN LEAVES

When you’re raking the acres and acres of fallen leaves, NEVER burn them. Bag them if your neighborhood still uses bags, or leave them piled up for the leaf sucker-up truck that some neighborhoods now have for leaf removal. In New York, burning leaves is banned.

Leaves and Cars

Never park on a pile of leaves. The heat from the recently running car’s exhaust system can ignite the leaves, and the resulting fire… well, it’ll destroy your car.

Our final tip is, of course, to review your insurance policies for your home, car, or rental property. If you have a business, review your business insurances, too.
