Smart holiday decoration storage ideas
Regardless of when you take your holiday decorations down, home owners have to store them someplace and in something. Perhaps you have space in your basement, or attic. Some people even store them in their garage, or shed.

Smart holiday decoration storage ideas
Wherever a home owner finds a place, we’re here to offer smart ways to store your holiday decorations.
Shrink Wrap Your Tree
If you have an artificial tree, and need to store it in the garage or shed, forget those storage bags they sell in the stores! Instead, shrink wrap your tree! It’ll keep it clean and protect it through the seasons.
Ornament Storage
Purchase, or re-use a box with compartments. Are you a wine drinker and buy it by the box? Keep the box with all the dividers, it’s perfect for storing away ornaments. If not, purchase tubs at your favorite local store, such as The Container Store in Garden City. If you can’t find a tub with compartments, no worries. Buy the deep tub, find Solo Cups and a piece of cardboard. Layer a row of cups on the bottom, load it up with ornaments, then lay a piece of cardboard down and another layer of cups with ornaments.
Always wrap the ornaments in tissue paper, or bubble wrap, to provide extra protection so they don’t break. Once it’s all done, make sure to print a list of which ornaments on each box. It’ll make it a lot easier to decorate the following year!
String Light Storage
As you take your lights down, wrap them around a piece of cardboard and store them in a box. Each year, when wrapping them around your arm, and flinging them in a box, they always seem to get tangled up. No one knows why….. sort of like no one knowing where all those Tupperware lids disappear to.
Label Boxes
It’s what we all forget to do every year: label boxes. Take a minute to write down what’s in the box, and maybe even number the boxes so you know which ones to open first - like the one with the tree stand, that should probably be box number one. It’ll make decorating a lot less….. let’s go with stressful. Plus, the kids will hear a lot less cursing, and that’s always a good thing, right?
Again, whenever it’s your family’s time to take down the holiday decor and store it away until the following holiday season, consider the above simple ideas for smarter storage.
And remember to take photos of all your new holiday gifts (serial numbers, receipts and the items themselves) in case you ever have to file a home owner’s claim!
